Charing Boss Pearce set to Retire

Author: Ryan Mills, 22/05/20

John Pearce stands down as Charing Firsts manager after three seasons

Ashford & District Sunday Football League side Charing FC are on the lookout for a new manager after boss John Pearce announced his decision to retire from his role. Pearce had been in charge of the Division One side since taking the reigns from former manager Darren Patterson in 2017 and has now decided to step down after five years with the club.

Pearce was initially named assistant manager of Charing Reserves in 2015 working alongside then manager Dan Jones before stepping to manage the first team two-years later. Before the covid-19 pandemic prematurely ended the season, Charing were enjoying a five-game winning sequence and sitting in seventh place in the Division One league table and well on track to trump the sixth-place finish Pearce guided the villagers to in the 2018/19 season.

The 55-year-old was the most recent recipient of the Division One manager of the month award in March having previously won the same award in November 2018, and despite not managing to guide Charing to any silverware during his five-year association with the club he did take the Charing on a great run in the Val Helen League Cup two-years ago where they lost to Ashford Cavaliers in the final at Homelands Stadium.

Pearce had coached sons Ritchie, Matt and Harry at the club during his spell with the village side as he had done previously at youth level for the likes of Metro, Ashford Town and Ashford Borough, and has taken the tough decision to step down to spend more time with his two young grandchildren George and Rosie.

Son Matt, who played for his dad last season at the club, shared his gratitude for his fathers support over the years and for the endless car journeys to and from fixtures.

Matt said: “On behalf of Harry, Ritchie and me a big thank you for putting in all of the time and effort over the years. He’s supported us with our football and been our coach too, as well as driving us all over Kent taking us to different games big or small. Enjoy your retirement dad and we’ll have a beer once the virus has gone”.
