Author: Ryan Mills, 07/10/19

Awards for Gibbs & Milton, Cook & Mehmet, Walton and Hemstead for September

It’s hard to believe that we are already well over a month into the new season! September threw up some fantastic team performances and shock results as Sunday League managers looked to hit the ground running and show off their new summer signings.

Every calendar month a manager will be chosen from each of the four divisions as recognition for consistent results and good discipline and calculated by the following scoring criteria:

Home Win= 3 Points

Away Win= 4 Points

Draw (Home or Away)= 1 Point

Performance of the Week= 2 Points

Red Card = Minus 2 Points

Should there be two managers on the same points their position will be decided by the better disciplinary record over the previous month (yellow cards, sin bins etc…)

Premier Division

1 Gary Gibbs/ Lee Milton (Bromley Green) 16 pts
2 Mike Hodges (Kennington) 12 pts
3 John Ripley (Brewmaster) 10 pts

Bromley Green manager Gary Gibbs is now in his third season in charge at the Waterside Ground having already led the Green to two consecutive promotions, and his in-form side currently top the Premier Division league table with four wins from five games. Gibbs along with co-manager Lee Milton led their side to a shock opening day victory over last season’s runners-up Market Hotel as Bromley Green ran out comfortable 6-0 winners before following that up with a 9-2 victory away at Stanhope & Beaver Rangers.

A 4-2 defeat away at Brewmaster in Week Three proved to be merely a blip in form as the Green went on to defeat reigning champions Kennington 4-1 at home a week later. They then moved three points clear at the top of the standings with another victory in an incredible game away at Nailbox as they ran out 10-7 winners to earn Gibbs and Milton the manager of the month prize.

Division One

1 Aaron Cook/ Ali Mehmet (Horsebox Bars) 16 pts
2 Paul Kerr (Aldington) 12 pts
3 Jace Dempster (Hythe Royal British Legion) 10 pts

Joint managers Aaron Cook and Ali Mehmet win the Division One manager of the month award after guiding early season table toppers Horsebox Bars to an unbeaten September. The Horseman won four and drew one of their five fixtures last month to go top of the Division One league standings and progress to the second round of the Bodkin Cup with a 2-1 home win over Lydd Grasshoppers.

Horsebox opened the season with a 4-0 away win at Appledore before taking a point against old rivals Folkestone United in their second fixture. They then went on to end Cheriton AFC’s own unbeaten start to the campaign returning from their trip to the Stadium 4-3 winners before making it three consecutive away wins as Ashley Spencer scored twice on the way to a 5-1 victory at Hythe Royal British Legion.

Division Two

1 James Walton (AFC Guildhall) 14 pts
2 Justin Day (Burton Grove) 9 pts
3 Mark Rutland (Hamstreet) 8 pts

AFC Guildhall player-manager James Walton has been a busy man in September and is rewarded with the Division Two manager of the month award for his efforts on and off the pitch. The Division Two leaders won all four of their games last month to live up to their reputation as pre-season promotion favourites, with Walton, who is also the club secretary instrumental to their success.

The Reds began the season with a morale boosting 4-1 away win at Park Farm Rangers before seeing off the threat of Biddenden’s youngsters a week later running out 4-2 winners at South Road. League newcomers Hamstreet were easily beaten in Week Three as Nathan Simms hat-trick helped them to a comfortable 7-0 win before Guildhall ended the month 5-2 winners away at South Willesborough. On the pitch Walton also claimed a clean sheet in the victory against Hamstreet and scored in the win at South Willesborough.

Division Three

1 Neil Hemstead (Singleton Barn) 18 pts
2 Tom Shaw (Mersham Sports Res) 14 pts
3 Carl Taylor (Folkestone United Res) 10 pts

Manager Neil Hemstead must be over the moon with the start that Singleton Barn have made this season as his side currently sit top of the Division Three table and have progressed in two different cup competitions so far. That kind of form has earned the former goalkeeper the manager of the month prize for the fourth tier as the Barn won all five of their league and cup fixtures in September scoring 24 goals.

The pub side are top of the table following three league victories, starting with the 5-2 away win at Smeeth & Brabourne on the opening weekend. They followed that up with a 2-1 victory away at Folkestone United Reserves before making it three wins from three games following the 4-1 home success against Pilgrims Sunday. Hemstead guided his side into the second round of the Kent Sunday Junior Trophy thanks to a 5-2 win over fellow Division Three rivals Bromley Green Reserves, whilst Kingsnorth Pilgrims were swept aside in an 8-0 victory to go through to the second round of the Sheber Trophy.
