Dunham and Boyd hit trebles as Sellindge win Swan Lane derby in Division One title clash

Nailbox ended a run of three consecutive league defeats as Adam Ghidaoui’s late equaliser earned his side a 2-2 draw in their home clash against Mersham Sports. The ‘Box have struggled with injuries and player availability over the past two-months but encouraged by new signing Tom Penn in the middle of the pitch the hosts took the lead early on through Lee Wild.  Mersham turned the game on its head though as recent signing Sam Wilson scored twice to put the visitors 2-1 ahead at the half-time interval, before Ghidaoui’s 85th minute leveller saw Nailbox claim a share of the points to help them in their bid to avoid relegation from the Premier Division this season.

Tony Dunham netted a hat-trick as Sellindge SSC returned to the top of the Division One league table with a 5-4 win against tenants Horsebox Bars in a hugely entertaining game (pictured above). Dunham’s treble helped the Swan’s end a poor start to the New Year that had seen them go three league fixtures without a victory, with Liam Middleton scoring the second of his two goals with virtually the final kick of the game to seal the points.
Middleton opened the scoring for Sellindge early on with a great strike only for Horsebox to go 2-1 ahead thanks to goals from James Nuttall and Ashley Boyd to immediately hit back. Dunham levelled things up with a well driven low strike before scoring again five-minutes later to put Sellindge 3-2 ahead only for Boyd to pounce again to score his second and Horsebox’s third as the two local rivals went in at half-time all-square at 3-3. Dunham completed his hat-trick early in the second period as Sellindge lead for virtually the entire second half until Horsebox were awarded a late penalty which was converted by Boyd to seal a treble of his own to make it 4-4. But Sellindge went on to grab a dramatic winner with Middleton scoring his second of the morning with a perfectly weighted lobbed effort to claim the local bragging rights.

Lolzors Reserves came back from going behind twice before grabbing an extra-time winner to beat Burton Grove 3-2 and book a place in the last-four of the Peter Pain League Cup. In a game severely affected by the heavy pitch, home side Burton Grove went ahead thanks to a brilliant strike from top goal scorer Andy Crouch, but Lolzors went in at half-time level thanks to Brad Parker’s equaliser. James Ross restored Burton’s lead early in the second half before Aiden Bourne’s penalty took the game to extra-time setting up Brad Hughes to grab the all-important winner in the 115th minute for the Pumas.

Joining them in the semi-finals are AFC Guildhall who returned to winning ways thanks to a brilliant first-half performance with a comfortable 6-2 away win at Ashford Spartans. James Walton’s side had lost their two previous league fixtures, but Peter Carey’s hat-trick helped the visitors book a second cup semi-final this season having already secured their place in the last-four of the Sheber Trophy before Christmas. An own goal and further strikes from Steven Masters and Stuart Graham made sure of the victory as Guildhall led 5-2 at the break, cancelling out goals from Liam Edmonds and Tom Wilkes for the hosts.

Ashley Sales bagged a hat-trick to help Folkestone United extend their lead at the top of the Division Three standings with a comprehensive 8-0 victory at home to Kingsnorth Pilgrims. Sales’ treble was a welcomed boost for United as they overcame last week’s shock 8-1 defeat to Bromley Green Reserves with a big victory of their own to move nine points at the top of the table. Ben Parker added to United’s tally with a brace, while individual goals from Jevon Hraboweckyj, Jordan Burton and Ryan Jeffrey completed the scoring as United amazingly scored eight or more goals in a game for the fourth time this season.

Mersham Sports Reserves set up a Division Three League Cup quarter final against Kingsnorth Pilgrims as they beat Smeeth & Brabourne 2-1 in their rescheduled preliminary round clash. The fixture was switched to Smeeth’s home ground due to a waterlogged pitch up the A20 in Mersham but waving home advantage didn’t seem to affect Tom Shaw’s side as they went through winning by the odd goal in three. Luke Goddard and Craig Thomson both hit the target for the sky-blues cancelling out James Evans’ strike for Smeeth, as Mersham won for the first time since November following three games without a victory.

Further ahead in the competition, Bromley Green Reserves won their quarter final clash at the Ridge beating Singleton Barn 4-2. Goals from Jordan Osborne, Sam Ades, Ashley Webster and Charlie Wallis saw the Green march on into the last-four of the competition where they now face Division Three leaders Folkestone United Reserves for a place in the final. Singleton Barn replied through skipper Paul Halliday and a first goal of the season from Jordan Luckman, and now can concentrate on securing promotion to Division Two next season.
