Rangers defeat Market while Aldington extend lead at top of Division One

KENT SUNDAY PREMIER CUP- FIFTH ROUND

Bromley Green suffered the heartbreak of exiting the Kent Sunday Premier Cup after going down 4-3 after extra-time at Medway League side Chatham Town. Connor Little’s 90th minute goal saw the Green level the tie up a three goals apiece at the end of normal time, but Ryan Laker’s extra-time winner for the hosts ended the county cup dream for joint managers Gary Gibbs and Lee Milton and a possible place in the quarter finals. Earlier goals from Luke Burdon and Pat Kingwell had kept the Premier Division title contenders in the hunt, but goals from Jack Cousins, Lee Armstrong, Matt Rowe and Laker’s all-important winning strike saw Chatham go through to the last-eight.

PREMIER DIVISION

Goals from Kai Friday and Luke Walder helped Stanhope & Beaver Rangers take all three points as they ended Market Hotel’s recent good form winning 2-1 at Sandyacres. Rangers move up to fourth place in the Premier Division league table and level on points with Market with this victory as Walder pounced to net his tenth goal of the season for the visitors. Bradley Baker once again got his name on the score sheet claiming Market’s sole strike as Ryan Smith’s side saw their four-game winning league sequence ended.

Carlum Macleod scored twice as reigning champions Kennington reignited their own title hopes with a 5-2 away victory at Mersham Sports. Macleod’s brace took the tricky forward onto 12 goals for the season as Kennington ended a run of two consecutive league defeats with a much-needed victory to move up into fifth position in the standings. Further goals from Antonio Comparetto, Steve Johnson and Robbie Greenfield cemented the win for Mike Hodges’ side to cancel out two goals from prolific Mersham striker Sam Wilson in reply.

DIVISION ONE

First half strikes by Stephen Cowell and Alex Williams saw Aldington increase their lead at the top of the Division One league table to three points with a 2-0 home win over Hythe Royal British Legion. Cowell opened the scoring after just four minutes when he fired home from just outside the penalty area before Williams doubled the lead for the hosts with a fantastic left-footed individual effort to see Paul Guest’s side take a two goal lead into the half time interval. Hythe battled to get back into the game in the second period but came unstuck against a stubborn Aldington defence as home goalkeeper James Sutton held on to record a fourth clean sheet of the season on the way to their fourth successive league victory.

Sellindge lost ground at the top of the standings after they were held to a shock 1-1 draw at home to bottom of the table Appledore. Liam Middleton scored the only goal of the game for Sellindge in what turned out to be a frustrating morning for the Swans that saw Tony Dunham miss from the penalty spot and midfielder James Gibson hit the woodwork on four occasions. Appledore will take a lot of positives from the fixture as they ended an unwanted run of five successive defeats thanks to Gabriel Madalin Anghel’s strike and moved to within three points of tenth place Hythe RBL.

Third place Ashford Genclik extended their winning run in the league to seven consecutive victories with a 4-0 success over Lydd Grasshoppers. The victory for Genclik made up for their 6-0 defeat to the same opponents in the reverse fixture back in September as goals from Emin Yalcin, Jack Cossey, Ozcan Yalcin and debutant Joe Mant earned them another important three points in their bid to earn promotion to the Premier Division in their first season as members of the league.

Charing continued their recent run of good form recording a fourth successive league victory beating Cheriton AFC 3-1 at home. Goals from Lewis Bagshaw, Luca Fasoli and Rob Marsden did the damage as Charing followed up recent victories over Hythe RBL, Appledore and Folkestone United with another three points. Ben Ashton replied for Cheriton with his 21st strike of the campaign but that wasn’t enough for the visitors who suffered a second defeat in a row and are now nine points off the top of the table.

Robbie Westbrook netted a hat-trick for home side Folkestone United as they got the better of Horsebox Bars winning 5-3 at The Gore. Westbrook’s treble helped United to a fifth win in their previous six league and cup fixtures as the hosts warmed up for their crucial Val Helen League Cup semi final against division leaders Aldington next weekend. The victory was secured with further goals from Reece Mooring and Jed Burns to cancel out two goals from James Nuttall and one from Aaron Cook for the Horsemen in a hugely entertaining eight-goal thriller.

DIVISION TWO

Adam Mercer scored the only goal of the game as Hamstreet returned to the top of the Division Two table at the expense of visitors Troggs in their 1-0 win at the Pound Lees Sports Ground. Mercer’s strike was his fourth goal of the season as the ‘Street leapfrogged their visitors back into first place, with home goalkeeper Adam Roffey successful in keeping the Troggs’ free-scoring forward line quiet throughout on his way to a first clean sheet this term.

Kent Cup quarter finalists South Willesborough show no signs of letting up as they returned from their trip to AFC Guildhall 5-1 winners. Lewis O’Leary and Michael Norris both netted two goals apiece for South Willesborough sandwiching Craig Clifford’s effort as Brad Horne’s side extended their unbeaten run to 14 league and cup games. Nathan Sims grabbed what turned out to be a consolation goal for Guildhall who have seen their own title ambitions take a dent in recent weeks with just one win in their previous five league fixtures.

Former Market Hotel midfielder Reece Pringle scored two goals to help Ashford Cavaliers end their six-game losing streak with a 3-2 away win at Lolzors Reserves. Pringle netted twice to score his first goals for the club while an own goal secured three important points to keep Dave Mabb’s sides promotion hopes alive. Saul Persad scored both goals for unlucky Lolzors who fell to a fifth consecutive league and cup defeat and remain second from bottom at the wrong end of the standings.

Burton Grove continued to show progress under new manager Matt Johnson as they held Biddenden to a 4-4 draw (pictured above). Andy Crouch claimed a first half hat-trick for the Grove while club legend James Ross claimed Burton’s fourth on his record 400th appearance for the club, but had to settle for a share of the points as two goals from George Large and individual efforts from Kieran Funnell and Harry Lambourne earnt Biddenden a well-deserved point.

DIVISION THREE

Leaders Folkestone United Reserves suffered a shock 8-1 defeat away at a rampant Bromley Green Reserves and missed the opportunity to extend their six-point lead at the top of the Division Three league standings. Matt Webster scored the only goal of the game for United as they were brought down to Earth by hosts Bromley Green as Sid Hone’s side extended their unbeaten league sequence to seven games. Jamie Dobbin and Sam Ades both scored twice for the Green while an own goal and single strikes from Charlie Wallis, Alex Weaver and Bradley Osborne completed the one-sided victory.

Goals from Ben Bromley and skipper Paul Halliday helped Singleton Barn get over their recent cup exit with a 2-0 home win over promotion rivals Mersham Sports Reserves at the Ridge. The Barn are now just seven points behind long time leaders Folkestone United with five games in-hand as they chase the league and cup double in the Division Three this season.
