Ashford Sunday Charity Trophy- Round One

Division One side Cheriton AFC proved too strong for Troggs as they eased into the second round of the Charity Trophy winning 8-0. Both teams have enjoyed decent starts to the new season in their respective divisions but Cheriton proved ruthless in front of goal to go through to the second round thanks to a comfortable victory against their Division Two opponents. Danny Roberts scored three times to move on to five goals for the season while strike partner Craig Harding also netted a hat-trick to open his goal account for the campaign. Another two goals from Kieron Wrigley completed the scoring while home goalkeeper Petr Bris earned his clean sheet saving a second half penalty for Chris Jones’ side.

They will face Brewmaster in the second round after the High Halden side returned from their trip to Division One strugglers Appledore 5-0 winners. Brad Burton opened the scoring for the Brews before midfielder Frank Godfrey doubled their lead after half an hour. Burton scored his second of the morning to make it 3-0 before half time while second half goals from Ben Squires-Quinn and Ryan Vaughan sealed the victory.

Matt Dray scored the only goal of the game as Premier Division Mersham Sports just edged their way past Charing winning 1-0 at the Mote. Mersham won on the road for a second time this season thanks to Dray’s first strike of the campaign, while at the other end of the pitch new goalkeeper James Atkins kept an important clean sheet to help see his new team through to round two where they await either Biddenden or Kennington.

Justin Howard netted four times to help bottom of the table Premier Division side Lolzors to a 6-3 home win against Ashford United Thirds. Howard was on top form to help the Pumas to a morale boosting victory against their Division Three opponents after a difficult start to life in the top division. Further goals from Matt Wright and Mac Ellender made sure they progressed to the second round cancelling out a brace from Craig Hagley and one from summer signing Matt Jarvis for United.

South Willesborough enjoyed a comfortable morning as they thrashed Division Three side Smeeth & Brabourne on their cup debut 8-0 at the Ridge. Mark Hilden, a summer signing from Appledore, fired home a hat trick for the Frog Islanders adding to individual strikes from Mike Norris, Tom Brown, Jordan Horne, Jay Gardener and Sam Sowdon. Brad Horne’s side now face Division One Ashford Genclik in round two.

Tony Norris proved a handful as Horsebox bars came back from going behind to ensure they progressed to the second round thanks to a 7-3 away win at Division One rivals Lydd Grasshoppers. Norris got on the score sheet four times as the Horsemen set up a home second round clash against Ashford Cavaliers, while the win was completed thanks to a double from top scorer James Nuttall and one from Ashley Spencer. Grasshoppers had taken the lead through an outstanding strike from Joe Lehmann, while both Ricky Bingham and Danny Bennett also netted for the ten man hosts after player-manager Andy Bennett was red carded when conceding a first half penalty.

Ashford Sunday Charity Trophy- Round Two

Division Three leaders Singleton Barn pushed Stanhope & Beaver Rangers all the way in their Charity Trophy second round fixture before losing out 4-3 at Pitchside. Neil Hemstead’s side came close to a giant killing against their Premier Division opponents having got back level after going 2-0 down early in the game. Tom Collins scored twice for Stanhope to put them two goals ahead, but Singleton Barn were awarded a penalty and Rangers reduced to ten men for handball setting up Paul Halliday to score from the spot and pull a goal back. Bradley Freund equalised for the Division Three side before half time, but Rangers pulled away again going 4-2 ahead thanks to second half goals from Alfie Brazil and Dan Cornell. Both teams had a player sent off for collecting two yellow cards in the second period leaving Rangers down to nine men, and Freund’s second goal of the morning set up an exciting finish as Stanhope held on to confirm their place in the quarter finals of the competition.

Division One

Sellindge SSC closed in on the top three at the top of the Division One league standings as they maintained their 100% winning start to the new season with a 4-0 home win against Hythe Royal British Legion. The Swans are just a point behind Horsebox Bars, Aldington and Cheriton AFC in the table with games in hand on all three of their rivals as they continue their excellent start to the campaign. Another three points were sealed thanks to goals from Darren Winfield, Pete Sikora, Eamon Elalem and Shaun Carey with goalkeeper Dan Green keeping a second clean sheet of the season.

Division Two

Chris Shanny scored a hat-trick for the second weekend in succession as Ashford Cavaliers beat leaders AFC Guildhall 4-3 to end their hosts unbeaten start to the season. Cavaliers closed the gap to just two points with a game in hand on Guildhall as recent signing Shanny once again proved prolific in front of goal to help Dave Mabb’s side bring home all three points. Neil Cheesman scored on his return to the club after a spell at Fox Sunday to make sure of the points to cancel out goals from Steven Masters, Will Sanders and player-manager James Walton for the league leaders.

Biddenden move up to fourth place in the table as they beat old rivals Lolzors Reserves 4-0. The pair enjoyed two decent matches last season as they battled it out for the Division Three championship title, and the ‘Den got revenge and took the bragging rights this time enjoying a comfortable win. Two goals from top scorer George Large and one apiece from Callum Wallis and Tom Weeks sealed all three points for Rhys Powell Jones’ young side as they recorded their first win over 90 minutes since the opening weekend of the season.

Hamstreet ended Burton Grove’s three game winning streak as they returned from their trip to the North School 4-2 winners to move up to fifth in the standings. Mark Rutland’s side were pegged back twice after going ahead by Burton but scored two unanswered second half goals to take all three points. Joe Spicer netted for Hamstreet to take his goal tally to six for the season adding to individual strikes from Jake North, Dane Rollings and Dan Sims to see off their hosts who had Jurgen Ahmetaj and Dean Spurrell on target.

Division Three

Pilgrims Sunday eased to a comfortable 7-0 away win at bottom of the table Kingsnorth Pilgrims to themselves move up to third in the standings with a second league victory of the season. Seven different players got on the score sheet for Karl Lowry’s side including Ralph Phelps, Lewis Griffiths, Nathan Cook, Xavier Marshall, Yonas Tesfay, Rob Boorer and man of the match Phil Herz as they moved to within two points of leaders Singleton Barn with victory.

Matt Moon opened his goal account for the season scoring a brace as Aldington Reserves recorded a first ever Sunday League win beating Charing Reserves 3-0 at the Reynolds Ground. Moon was top scorer for the first team last season with 52 goals in all competitions and got off the mark this term scoring two accompanying Kian Derry’s strike for the villagers.
